Carte Generale du Monde c.1676
Carte Generale du Monde c.1676
Decorative double-hemisphere map of the world, originally published by the French geograpfher Pierre Duval (1618–1683). The representation of Australia (Nouvelle Holande) is depicted in an unusual and less accurate form. In North America, California is shown as an island, and the Great Lakes are open-ended towards the west. A large Terre de Iesso spans nearly the entire North Pacific. In South America, the mythical Lac Parime and Lac Xaraies still appear. Duval also depicts a massive southern continent, which is nearly attached to Nouvelle Zelande and is labeled Terre de Quir. Surrounding the hemispheres are diagrams showing the planetary orbits and the ancient and modern names of the winds, as well as a terrestrial globe and an armillary sphere.

Map of the World c.1685
Map of the World c.1685
Attractive late 17th century map of the world, originally published by the famous Dutch cartographer and publisher Nicolaes Visscher. This iconic map is regarded as the master forerunner of a number of highly decorative Dutch world maps produced throughout the remainder of the century. Distinctive attractiveness found in the border decorations showing dramatical classical scenes representing “the rape of Persephone”, “Zeus being carried across the heavens in an eagle-drawn chariot”, “Poseidon commanding his entourage”, and “Demeter receiving the fruits of the Earth”.This highly decorative piece of art includes a set of smaller polar hemispheric projections at the top and bottom of the map.

Mappe Monde c.1713
Mappe Monde c.1713
A very attractive twin hemisphere map of the world by the famous Dutch cartographer Pieter (Pierre) Vander Aa published in his atlas ‘Le Nouveau Theatre du Monde’ in Leiden in 1713.This uncommon decorative world map has vignettes symbolizing the four continents filling the corners and illustrates the routes of several sixteenth century explorers in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including Magellan, Tasman, Chevalier de Chermont and Mendana. The western coastline of New Zealand is illustrated, along with parts of Australia and Tasmania. The entire northwest coast of North America is blank above the peninsular California. There is a remnant of the coastline that suggested a connection between North America and Asia on earlier maps: here with a notation concerning the discoveries of Vasco de Gamma. The eastern coast of Asia is truncated and a huge Terre d’Yeco forms the northern part of Japan.

Munster World Map c.1550
Munster World Map c.1550
Decorative map of the modern world, originaly published in Munster’s 1550 edition of Cosmographia. This is the first map to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). Munster is non-committal about the continuity of the only recently discovered North and South America, an unbroken Central America being implied but not clearly shown. All of North America is called Terra Florida and the west coast of America appears on the right side of the map. Though unnamed, Terra Australis is present but small. Munster adds further to the confusion over Taprobana (Ceylon or Sumatra), depicting a Sumatra-shaped Taprobana on the west side of the Indian sub-continent, and Java in position of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) off the southeast coast of India. In Africa, the legendary mountains of the moon are shown as the origin of the Nile.
